Quiçama National Park, also known as Kissama National Park, is a vast and biodiverse national park located in northwestern Angola, approximately 70 kilometers (about 43 miles) south of the capital city, Luanda. Covering an area of around 9,600 square kilometers (3,700 square miles), it is one of the largest national parks in Angola and one of the most significant wildlife conservation areas in the country.
The park is bordered by the Cuanza River to the north and the Longa River to the south, with a diverse landscape that includes savannas, dense forests, mangroves, and coastal ecosystems. This variety of habitats supports a wide range of wildlife species, making it a crucial refuge for Angola’s fauna.
Historically, Quiçama was severely affected by poaching and the civil war, which led to a drastic reduction in its wildlife populations. However, efforts to restore the park began in the early 2000s with “Operation Noah’s Ark,” a project that involved the relocation of animals from other parts of Africa, particularly South Africa and Botswana, to repopulate the park. These included elephants, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species.
Today, Quiçama National Park is home to a growing population of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, antelopes, zebras, wildebeests, and a variety of bird species. The park’s proximity to Luanda makes it one of the most accessible national parks in Angola, and it has become a popular destination for ecotourism.
