Zojo-ji Temple

located in Shiba Park, Minato, Tokyo, is a major Buddhist temple and an important cultural site. It serves as the main temple of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism in the Kanto region. Zojo-ji was founded in 1393 and moved to its present location in 1598. Historically, it has strong ties to the Tokugawa family, who ruled Japan during the Edo period, with several Tokugawa shoguns and family members buried in its grounds.

The temple’s main gate, Sangedatsumon, is a striking example of Edo-period architecture and one of the few structures that survived both the fires of the Edo period and the bombings of World War II. The gate is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Zojo-ji Temple is also known for its Jizō statues dedicated to unborn or deceased children, a common sight in Japanese temples. The temple grounds, with Tokyo Tower as a backdrop, create a beautiful contrast between old and new Japan.

The temple plays a significant role in local Buddhist ceremonies, including memorials, festivals, and New Year’s events. It's a peaceful and spiritual spot, offering a moment of quiet reflection in the bustling heart of Tokyo. #travel #japan #photography
